Lecture: “The Alluring World of Japanese Yukata Quilts”

Patricia and her daughter, Victoria Stone are the founders of the Seattle based company Okan Arts (okanarts.com).  She is a former graphic designer quilting professional and an influencer with a strong presence in the quilt industry.  Okan means “mom” in Japanese.  Mesmerized by the beauty of Japanese textiles, they are makers of creative quilts, teachers and speakers.  Patricia is the author of “East-Meets West Quilts”.  Okan Arts sells Japanese fabric, leads international workshops, produces podcasts and leads quilting and textile tours in Japan.  They import vintage textiles from Japan and offer quilts by Patricia in its online gallery. Currently Patricia is working on a quilt series that incorporates Japanese yukata cottons and her newest curved piecing technique-inserted curves.

Patricia will take our guild to Japan for a flashback of the Tokyo Quilt Festival, a tour of the 2022 Yokohama Quilt Show and a visit to a traditional chusen-dyeing workshop. Patricia ends her show with a Trunk show of her own quilts made with vintage Japanese cottons.

Her work has been juried into a variety of major shows including Houston and Paducah as well as art galleries and SAQA exhibits. Jenny loves seeing her students realize they CAN quilt their own work on a domestic machine. She calls herself the Quilt Skipper because once while quilting her own quilt she was so delighted by the unexpected beauty of it and what emerged from her needle that she found herself cheerfully skipping around the house when taking breaks!
